Marilyn Newman

Founder of Hypnotherapy Training Australia

Hypnotherapy Training Australia began with the vision of Marilyn Newman, who founded HTA in 2009 after many years of practice, learning and exploration within the field of hypnotherapy.

Marilyn believed that hypnotherapy could be taught with both professional depth and genuine heart. Her vision was to create training that went beyond simply learning techniques — training that encouraged students to understand people, to work with compassion and curiosity, and to recognise the extraordinary capacity for change that exists within each individual.

Throughout her career as a professional hypnotherapist, Marilyn continued to explore and develop her approach, bringing together Clinical Hypnotic Science, therapeutic practice and her own considerable experience. That philosophy became the foundation upon which Hypnotherapy Training Australia was built, and it remains an important part of HTA today.

Kaz Field Anderson

Co-Founder, Clinical Advisor & creator of the DeTrauma Technique -DTT ™

Following Marilyn’s passing, her daughter Kaz Field Anderson continued her mother’s work and became Director of Training at Hypnotherapy Training Australia.

Already an experienced hypnotherapist with decades of clinical experience, Kaz brought her own knowledge, personality and therapeutic philosophy to HTA while continuing the heart-centred foundations established by Marilyn.

During her years as Director of Training, Kaz expanded HTA’s teaching in areas including trauma, anxiety, depression and Resource Therapy, and developed the DeTrauma Technique – DTT™, which continues to form part of the therapeutic approaches taught within HTA.

Kaz’s contribution represents an important chapter in the HTA story. Her passion for helping people understand and work with the different parts of themselves helped shape many of the approaches and philosophies that continue to influence our training today.

Kaz is also the creator and Editor of the newly released Beyond The Veil magazine, continuing to inform our amazing hypnotherapy community

John Pemberton,

CEO & Director of Training HTA, Vice President of the Australian Hypnotherapist’s Association (AHA)

John Pemberton’s journey into hypnotherapy began through his own experience of its capacity to create meaningful change. After a long career educating, coaching and developing people and teams, that experience led him to study hypnotherapy and a range of complementary therapeutic approaches — eventually bringing him back to the place where his own hypnotherapy training began: HTA.

As John became increasingly involved in teaching, mentoring and supporting HTA students, he moved into the role of Director of Training. In August 2025, John took the next step in that journey and became the owner of Hypnotherapy Training Australia, carrying forward the legacy created by Marilyn and continued by Kaz while also beginning the next chapter of HTA.

John brings a strongly student-centred approach to training. His philosophy is simple: teach from the perspective of the person who is learning. Rather than simply presenting techniques and expecting students to remember them, HTA training is designed to help students understand why something works, experience it for themselves, practise it safely, ask questions, make mistakes, grow in confidence and gradually discover the therapist they want to become.

That approach has helped shape HTA into the learning community it is today. Training is delivered live and interactively, with an emphasis on connection, experience, practice, support and the understanding that becoming a good therapist involves much more than completing a course.

John continues to honour and teach much of the work developed by Marilyn and Kaz, while continuing to evolve the program as the profession, our understanding of therapeutic practice and the needs of students continue to evolve.

At the heart of HTA remains the philosophy that has travelled through each chapter of its story: Changing lives, one heart at a time.

Our goal is not simply to graduate students with a qualification. It is to help develop confident, compassionate and capable clinical hypnotherapists who have experienced the work, understand the responsibility that comes with it, and feel supported as they take what they have learned into their own practices and communities
